9.7.05 The Impact of Oil Supplies on World Peace

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 7195 Times; 21 comments

The world is finally waking up to the idea that oil and natural gas are finite commodities and that world demand currently and for the foreseeable future will exceed world supplies. As with all commodities, when demand exceeds supply, the price will continue to rise until sufficient numbers of consumers leave the market to re-balance the supply and demand equation.

11.23.04 Going Back to Work After the Election Dust Settles

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 4722 Times; 4 comments

We have now staggered through a very polarized election that appears to have been a basic comparison of testosterone levels rather than real issues. No one discussed the real critical issues surrounding Iraq or the Middle East.

Solar Thermal generation would also benefit from this same phenomenon. If the environmental community was willing to recognize these factors they might re-think their opposition to a major interstate transmission system.

7.1.04 Competing for Energy Resources - Part 1

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 7872 Times; 26 comments

Both electricity and liquid fuel supplies appear to be increasing in costs in the United States. The U.S. appetite for liquid fuels in the forms of gasoline and diesel fuels has very nearly reached the capacity maximum of the existing U.S. refineries.

4.8.04 What is an Energy Subsidy and What Does it Mean?

Topic: Business & Corporate

Article Viewed 4501 Times; 2 comments

When Congress tried to create a comprehensive "Energy Bill" the opposition cried loudly that it was a tremendous U.S. cave-in to big oil or that the Energy Bill's subsidies cost the Federal Government billions of dollars in Tax Revenues.

2.10.04 The 'Almost' Energy Bill and the Economy

Topic: Business & Corporate

Article Viewed 5480 Times; 5 comments

The word on the street is that the Democrats just couldn't tolerate the President getting three big wins in the same period, no matter what the issue was. The signing of the Medicare Bill was a big win for the President and the announcement that the economy was improving was a big win for the President.

1.21.04 THE NATURAL GAS SUPPLY ISSUE, IMPORTED OIL, JOB CREATION, ENERGY INDEPENDENCE, THE U.S. ECONOMY

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 5779 Times; 12 comments

Convincing evidence is now available that indicates the declining domestic supply of natural gas. Even though the "Energy Bill" provides incentives for development of less productive gas supplies and opens some Federal lands to development, the net impact of the new areas will only be to return natural gas production to 1999 levels for a reasonably short period of time.

A good energy policy is one that looks at both supply and demand issues. Because energy policy is likely to have a strong influence on the environment, a good energy policy is also one that looks carefully at the impact of new energy sources on the environment. The goal of the energy policy should be to reduce the U.S.’s environmental impact on itself and the rest of the world without crippling the economy.

4.22.03 Electricity Pricing and the Impact of the Natural Gas Crunch

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 3900 Times; 9 comments

Two recent articles caused me to review the issues associated with natural gas supply and electricity pricing. The purpose of the review was to determine the impact that a shortage of natural gas would have on electricity pricing. In addition to the simple supply and demand issues, it is interesting to speculate on how natural gas pricing might impact other potential fuels such as fuel oil, coal and nuclear generation.

An interesting article in the “Platts Megawatt Daily” dated June 28, 2002 caught my attention. This article titled “Despite cancellations, 88,900 MW came on-line in Jan.-May 2002”. This article made me begin to think about how this new capacity would alter electricity reserves, natural gas prices, transmission congestion, pipeline capacity and the many other factors that might need to be considered.
