Background


Omar Siddiqui is the Program Manager, Energy Utilization research within the Power Delivery & Utilization sector for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

His research activities focus on assessing the economic impacts, environmental impacts, and best practices of energy efficiency, demand response, dynamic pricing, and the emerging smart grid infrastructure, including: CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, estimation of resource potential, cost/benefit valuation, integration into utility resource planning and transmission and distribution planning, and portfolio development.

Mr. Siddiqui joined EPRI in 2007 with more than ten years of experience in the energy efficiency arena. He consults with EPRI members to develop strategic frameworks to integrate energy efficiency into the calculus of utility capital and operational planning.

Before joining EPRI, Mr. Siddiqui worked at Global Energy Partners as a project manager and director of business development. He consulted with utilities across the country on energy efficiency projects and the assessment of end use technology applications. His background also includes financial, merger and acquisition, and management consulting experience with such firms as J.P. Morgan, Kaiser Permanente, and A.T. Kearney. Mr. Siddiqui began his career as an energy analyst at Barakat & Chamberlin.

Mr. Siddiqui received a BS degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University. He received his MBA from the Anderson School at the University of California at Los Angeles.

One baseline for this study is the 2008 AEO estimate of 3,717 TWh for U.S. electricity use in 2008, with residential consumption at 38 percent, commercial at 36 percent, and industrial at 26 percent. In both residential and commercial sectors, lighting and cooling are major end uses.

Electricity consumption in the U.S. residential, commercial, and industrial sectors has grown at an average rate of 1.7 percent per year from 1996 to 2006. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) in its 2008 Annual Energy Outlook Reference Case forecast (AEO 2008) projects that electrical consumption in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors will grow at an annual rate of 1.07 percent from 2008 to 2030, with consumption increasing by 26 percent, from 4,696 terawatt-hours (TWh) in that period.

A Smart Grid will enable a number of operational benefits for utilities, many of which go hand-in-hand with the customer service benefits already discussed. Benefits include advanced distribution management functions, outage management, power theft detection, as well as automated change of service, improved asset management capabilities, greater load profiling ability, grid stabilization, and a variety of advanced metering functions.
