J.K. August, PE, is an engineer with CORE, Inc. Providing design basis maintenance optimization software and reliability engineering services for generation, transmission and distribution, he has authored professional papers on reliability, engineering, and maintenance along with two books published by Penn Well Publishing (Power Engineering magazine) "Applied Reliability Centered Maintenance" (2000), and "RCM: How to Build a Reliable Plant Maintenance Program" (2006). He has over 30 years experience in power maintenance, engineering and management. He graduated from the Universities of Colorado (1981, 1992) and Cornell University (1975) and holds BS and ME degrees in mechanical engineering, physics, and engineering management. In addition to being a licensed PE, he is a member of the American Nuclear Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineering, chairs (or chaired) professional standards committees in each. A Society of Maintenance & Reliability Professional-certified member, he has managed various nuclear and other large projects over his career. He has worked in fossil and nuclear power plants, transmission and distribution, including the prototype Fort St. Vrain High Temperature Gas Reactor, defining, resolving and correcting many significant design and process problems. Although he began his career working in mining, he spent 1975-1980 in the U.S. Navy nuclear power program.
