6.24.10 Renewable Energy Production from Tannery Wastes

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 1297 Times; 1 comments

The conventional leather tanning technology is highly polluting as it produces large amounts of organic and chemical pollutants. Wastes generated by the leather processing industries pose a major challenge to the environment. According to conservative estimates, about 600,000 tons per year of solid waste are generated worldwide by leather industry and approximately 40-50% of the hides are lost to shavings and trimmings.

8.5.09 Biomass Wastes

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 5277 Times; 13 comments

Biomass is the material derived from plants that use sunlight to grow which include plant and animal material such as wood from forests, material left over from agricultural and forestry processes, and organic industrial, human and animal wastes.

6.3.09 Gasification of Municipal Solid Waste

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 5386 Times; 11 comments

The enormous increase in the quantity and diversity of waste materials and their potentially harmful effects on the general environment and public health have led to an increasing awareness about an urgent need to adopt scientific methods for safe disposal of wastes. While there is an obvious need to minimize the generation of wastes and to reuse and recycle them, the technologies for recovery of energy from wastes can play a vital role in mitigating the problems.

3.4.09 The Thermal Decomposition of Biomass

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 5581 Times; 7 comments

Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of biomass occurring in the absence of oxygen. It is the fundamental chemical reaction that is the precursor of both the combustion and gasification processes and occurs naturally in the first two seconds. The products of biomass pyrolysis include biochar, bio-oil and gases including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. Depending on the thermal environment and the final temperature, pyrolysis will yield mainly biochar at low temperatures, less than 450 degrees C, when the heating rate is quite slow, and mainly gases at high temperatures, greater than 800 degrees C, with rapid heating rates.

2.4.09 Woody Biomass Utilization for Power Generation -- An Overview

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 6422 Times; 6 comments

Biomass power is the largest source of renewable energy as well as a vital part of the waste management infrastructure. An increasing global awareness about environmental issues is acting as the driving force behind the use of alternative and renewable sources of energy. A greater emphasis is being laid on the promotion of bioenergy in the industrialized as well as developing world to counter environmental issues.

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 5719 Times; 6 comments

All human activity viz., domestic, commercial, industrial, healthcare and agriculture generate solid waste. The quantity and nature of the waste vary with the activity and the level of technological development in a country. The enormous increase in the quantum and diversity of waste materials and their potentially harmful effects on the general environment and public health, have led to an increasing awareness about an urgent need to adopt scientific methods for safe disposal of wastes.

10.17.08 Clean Energy from Anaerobic Digestion of Organic Waste

Topic: Fossil & Biomass

Article Viewed 5732 Times; 16 comments

The generation and disposal of organic waste without adequate treatment result in significant environmental pollution. Besides health concerns for the people in the vicinity of disposal sites, degradation of waste leads to uncontrolled release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere.
